De Zingende Brug vzw - The Singing Bridge

A fervent love song from Andalucia, a swinging spiritual, a wedding song from Kosovo, a Polish lullaby, a kid's song in Zulu, a witty catch, a Sephardic song, a gentle Flemish love song, a Greek evergreen , a song from the mountains of Peru, a....

Do you feel your vocal chords vibrate at so much musical and cultural diversity? Then you're the right person for the 'Zingende Brug'!

A small appetizer?

Kókkina chíli ('Red lips I kissed', a love song from Greece)

Sednav da veceram (traditional courting song from Macedonia)

Shosholoza (Gumboot Dance and Zulu Call of the migrant workers from Zimbabwe in the South-African mines)

Who are we?

The 'Zingende Brug' is an open association of people who share a common interest in the folk song tradition, and welcomes anybody who wants to make acquaintance with it. We promote songs from every European country, always in the original language. Sometimes we look beyond the borders of Europe, and now and again we sing something modern for a change. In this way we carry on the work which the Viennese filologist Sepp Gregor (1903-1987) started in Essen, Germany, in 1949: building bridges over European borders through singing.

What do we do?

We won't save the world with songs, but it remains especially fascinating to submerge ourselves in this rich heritage and to discover what songs have in common and what makes them different. In this way we get to understand the culture and nature of a people, a region or an era. Music, pronunciation and background information on a song all are equally important.

Where and when do we sing?

The 'Zingende Brug' is not a choir, but rather a permanent song workshop, approached in different ways. There are monthly meetings in Berchem-Antwerp and in Brussels. Once a year there is a singing weekend and a summer singing week. We organize regular trips abroad to refresh contact with the roots of the songs. The 'Zingende Brug' does not think in terms of choir rehearsals or concerts, people just come along whenever they are able to. For place and dates see 'Activities'.
